Flying is a luxury: according to the WWF, 20 percent of the world’s population has ever taken a plane – billions of people around the world simply cannot afford it. In fact, only one percent of the world’s population is responsible for half of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by air travel.
A small elite minority therefore has a major impact on the climate, as flying causes up to ten times as many CO2 emissions as other means of transportation. Exactly how much depends on the route. You can find a comparison with average values in our graphic further down in the article. It shows: Bus and train are always more environmentally friendly than flying.
In addition, it often takes longer by plane than by bus and train. Within Germany, you will almost always reach your destination faster by train because security checks, waiting at the gate and take-off and landing take a lot of time when flying. But even if you want to travel abroad, some destinations are just as quick by bus and train as by plane. And if you book early, you can also save on tickets. The next trip can come…
Train And Bus: Faster And Cheaper
Traveling by plane is particularly harmful to the climate. The travel platform Omio has compared numerous routes by bus, train, and plane and has come to the following conclusion: if you want to arrive quickly, it is best to take the train on many routes.
For example, taking the train between London and Paris is almost 3.5 hours faster. If your start or destination is a city in Germany, you are also often faster by train. The platform has factored in check-in, security checks and transfer to the airport as well as waiting time at the gate and comes to the following conclusions:
Amsterdam – Düsseldorf
Train: 2:20 hours
Airplane: 3:10 hours
Taking the train is 51 minutes faster and, according to Omio, also saves over 80 kilograms of CO2. In addition, the train journey is often cheaper: you can get train tickets from around 47 euros at short notice, whereas plane tickets usually cost over 100 euros (we compared the prices for a booking three days in advance on a random basis). In addition, Amsterdam Central Station is located right in the city center, so you can start your city trip right away.
By the way, according to Omio, even by long-distance bus you are 20 minutes faster than by plane.
By train to Brussels or Paris
By train to Paris: it can be quicker than by plane. Other cities outside Germany are also usually cheaper and quicker to reach by train – check-in, security check and transfer to the airport as well as waiting time at the gate included.
Brussels – Frankfurt
Train: 3:00 hours
By plane: 3:40 hours
Tickets are available from as little as 65 euros*, while flight tickets for a direct flight usually cost around 200 euros*. Taking the train is not only cheaper, but also around 40 minutes faster. You also save over 100 kilos of CO2.
Paris – Frankfurt
Train: 3:38 hours
By plane: 3:55 hours
A short break in the city of love? If you’re flying from Frankfurt, you can take the train. The French TGV is 17 minutes faster than Lufthansa and AirFrance and also cheaper. Tickets cost 80 euros*, whereas plane tickets are more than twice as expensive (180 euros)*. What’s more, you save 122 kilos of CO2 – per person.
Munich – Vienna
Train: 4:10 hours
Plane: 4:15 hours
You can travel from Munich to Vienna in a relaxed manner by train. The plane is not a real alternative here, because even the fastest flight connection takes at least as long as the train with check-in, security checks and transfer to the airport.
What’s more, only two airlines fly this route directly – for around 400 euros*. A train ticket for the direct connection is available from 90 euros*.
